Netherlands: Updated SBI Codes and Activity Reporting Requirements

Netherlands

The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel, KVK) has introduced updated Standard Industrial Classification (SBI) codes for all companies registered in the Dutch Business Register. Between 5 and 7 September 2025, older codes were replaced with new five digit classifications. Companies must ensure their registered business activity description accurately reflects their operations, as KVK uses this information to assign the correct SBI codes. Updates must be submitted in Dutch through My KVK or via Form 14 where online access is not possible.

The updated structure reflects changes in the economy, including the growth of online platforms, combined physical and online retail, and sustainability related activities. Older activity categories have been retired where they are no longer relevant. The revision also supports better alignment with European classification standards.

Key changes and requirements

Companies must check that their activity description aligns with what they currently do and with the newly assigned SBI codes. If activities have been added, removed or reordered, companies must update their details promptly. KVK will then determine whether new codes should apply. Companies may also need to confirm that their Articles of Association correspond with the registered activities where relevant.

Consequences of non-compliance

If a company’s activity description is not correct, it will probably not have the correct SBI code(s), which could lead to problems. For example, the government, banks, and other organisations use the SBI code(s) to check:

• whether a company can get a subsidy

• whether a company must join a compulsory pension scheme

• whether a company can borrow money

• what the company’s insurance premium is
