Italy: A.TE.CO. Code Reclassification and Correction Process
The Italian National Institute for Statistics has introduced a new A.TE.CO. code classification, the national equivalent of NACE codes. From 1 April 2025, the updated coding applied automatically to all companies registered in Italy. Companies should have been notified of any change by the authorities through registered email, or they may view updates through the Impresa Italia app or website. A free online correction process is available until 30 November 2025 for companies whose new code does not align with their business purpose.
Companies must review whether their updated A.TE.CO. code correctly reflects their activities. If the new code is accurate, no further action is required. If the code does not match the actual business purpose, companies may request a correction before the local Chamber of Commerce. This is a one‑time correction, and any updated code must also be separately disclosed to the Tax Authority.
No amendments to the by‑laws or internal resolutions are required to complete the correction. To access the online correction system, the company’s representative must log in using Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale (SPID), an electronic ID (CIE), or a National Service Card. Representatives may delegate access to a third party, but the formal correction request must be digitally signed by the legal representative using an approved digital signature.
Key changes and requirements
The reclassification updates the national coding used to classify corporate activities. It applies to all companies registered in Italy. Companies must check whether their automatically assigned code reflects their current business purpose. If a correction is needed, they must submit an online request and complete separate disclosure to the Tax Authority.
